yoga1Mum & Baby Yoga:

The postnatal period is a very demanding yet special time for mothers and babies. It is a time for nurturing, bonding, relaxation and recovery.

These classes are specially designed to provide a warm, relaxing and supportive environment in which to spend quality time with baby, sharing beneficial practices to heal and strengthen your post natal body and learning to relax in each others’ presence over the postnatal year and beyond.

Every class involves post natal recovery yoga for mum, baby yoga and yoga for you to do together. These classes use rhyme and simple music to increase enjoyment and increase bonding.

The post natal body is very vulnerable, joints are loose, tummy and pelvic floor muscles have weakened, you can be feeling tired and emotional and the body is not stable. On top of this you are adapting to a new way of life and have a demanding little person to take care of.  The mum and baby yoga classes are designed to nurture both mum and baby during this period – improving posture, re-energising and recovering strength and vitality.

The postnatal period is one of great change and adjustment. During this time a woman is vulnerable to stress and strain on many different levels, so postnatal yoga is gentle and therapeutic.

The emphasis is upon nurturing and support: at a physical level the practices are designed to promote ease and comfort: stabilising the pelvis, toning the abdominal region, and supporting the lower back.

There are also practices to lift the spirits and re-energise, alternating with periods of recuperative rest.

These classes are also a fantastic way to support your baby’s development by improving muscle strength and tone, co ordination, and balance. It is also a wonderful way to bond with your baby and have fun together. It encourages instinctive parenting and promotes many well- used techniques for carrying, calming and soothing  baby. . Baby yoga stimulates all baby’s body systems and helps to integrate all of baby’s senses. classes help to get babies to stretch and move and to discover their abilities and bodies.  The sessions end with a period of deep relaxation.

Vinyasa yoga for Mum’s with Toddler’s

By the time babies turn into toddlers and preschoolers, mums need plenty of energy to keep up with their active little ones.

In these very informal classes, we work to optimise strength and energy  by introducing mums back in to a general vinyasa yoga practice.  This class is for mums who have recovered from childbirth and have no postnatal issues.

Once babies start to move around they don’t want to stay still for long to sit and do a yoga class so it is a time to focus on mums practice while the little ones just be, soaking up the energy, watching, joining in if they want to or playing with their little friends in the room.

For the toddlers we sometimes do a very short sequence using singing rhymes, walking balances, stretches and swings, rolling and bouncing but the focus of the class is for mums to get to do a yoga practice in the presence of their child.  The yoga sequence is a strong and dynamic practice that will really help mums stretch and strengthen and well and really connecting within, with the breath and stilling the mind helping reduce the stresses and busy minds mums often have. We always have a quiet restful time at the end and some chanting to ease everyone into quietness.

Children’s Yoga: 3 years +

These are fun classes using stories and themes to explore yoga in a fun and imaginative way. children’s yoga is a world apart from adult yoga classes, it is spontaneous, more creative and taught in a very different way.  The yoga classes provide children a learning opportunity to sharpen their minds, develop their concentration and extend their attention span, Yoga principles are absorbed through group activities, movement and music, rhymes and games, counting, repetition as well as basic yoga postures, relaxation and breathing.

The focus in children’s yoga is not on the child getting the postures perfect but exploring them in their own creative way and learning to correct and adjust their postures over time.

The children’s classes are currently only held for private group and school bookings and some school holiday classes are available so please subscribe to my newsletter on the home page to be notified of any upcoming school holiday classes or events.

What are the benefits of children’s yoga?

Yoga gives children exercise, develops body awareness and helps them to achieve a relaxed body and state of mind that is so very important in our stress filled modern world!

Yoga for children can help give them a healthier body, improved strength and stamina, flexibility, co-ordination, balance and poise.  It is a powerful way for children to become aware of their bodies and how they work and move.

Yoga compliments other physical activities and can both enhance performance and reduce risk of injury in other sports.  The postures help to stretch and tone muscles, keep bones healthy and aligned, improve breathing and support the health of the body through the nervous system.

Yoga helps children relax and control emotions, relieve anxiety, tension and stress.  It brings peace and helps them sleep better.  Breathing and relaxation techniques can be applied to situations in life to help control anger and deal with problems more calmly and effectively.

Yoga is non-competitive and can offer children a sense of accomplishment and empowerments and is a great way to increase self-esteem.

Yoga helps children concentrate better and sharpens their minds and can extent their attention span, it is also great for learning about self-control and self-discipline.  Studies show students who practice yoga have fewer disciplinary problems and gain higher grades.

Yoga activities provide ways for children to express their creativity and imagination and also improve social skills as children learn to work together and help each other while retaining their own individuality.

"Chrissie's classes are fantastic, I can't recommend them enough. When I started the baby massage course I was struggling to get my baby to settle, within 2 weeks of the course her colic had gone and she was sleeping, settled and happy. The classes really help me relax too. I now do the mum and baby yoga and am loving it."
